Video projection with sound | 1998 | 3:16 loop

In Venus…I see blue, Marsh composited video footage of a performance shot in her studio with a 3D animation of Venus to produce an immersive projection in which an avatar entices us to join her on an infinite journey across her planet. In this work, the artist plays a construct-like character inspired by the female heroines of virtual-fighting video games. Mixing cultural references, she also borrows from streetwear, martial arts movies, and animation to bolster her pop-cultural credentials. The work aims to undermine the illusions of fluidity and seamlessness that video games were increasingly embracing in the 1990s, following the industry’s widespread adoption of 3D graphics. The projection materializes a character that is automated and seemingly unreal, but also out of breath, aware of the camera, and self-conscious.
